Google Messages beta version has a bug causing the Magic Compose button to disappear. Despite this, users can still access the Magic Rewrite feature via the ‘plus’ menu. Google’s working on a fix. The app’s new text field design has been positively received, and other features like dual SIM RCS support and custom contact photos are being added.
The latest beta version of Google Messages (version 20250119_01_RC00) has caused the Magic Compose button to disappear for several users. This feature, which generates suggested replies based on the conversation context and past messages, has been a popular tool for quick and efficient texting.
Users have reported that the Magic Compose button, typically represented by a message bubble with a corner AI sparkle, is no longer visible in the text field. However, the Magic Rewrite feature, which offers alternative styles like Remix, Shakespeare, Chill, Lyrical, Excited, and Formal, can still be accessed from the ‘plus’ menu.
Google has acknowledged the issue and confirmed that it is likely a bug that will be addressed soon. In the meantime, users can toggle Magic Compose on or off in the settings under Settings > Suggestions > Magic Compose.
Despite the missing button, the redesigned Google Messages text field, which is not yet widely rolled out to stable, has received positive feedback for its clean and user-friendly design. The best design so far places Magic Compose/Rewrite outside of the field as part of the Smart Replies row.
Google Messages continues to roll out new features, including dual SIM RCS support and the ability to set custom photos for contacts. The company is working to resolve the Magic Compose issue promptly, ensuring users can continue to enjoy the full range of messaging features.
