In a time when health and fitness seem to be the order of the day, it’s surprising to discover that numerous Hollywood celebrities still maintain an unhealthy smoking habit.
Despite being part of an industry where image is everything, many stars in Hollywood are seen reaching for a lighter to ignite a cigarette, continuing with this detrimental habit.
While smoking has lost its popularity among the younger generation, there is a concern among experts that the increasing visibility of celebrities smoking could potentially make this addictive activity appealing to a new generation.
In the past, many turned to smoking as a means to suppress their appetite, among other reasons.
However, the negative effects such as stained teeth and fingers, the overpowering odor, and the severe health risks continue to act as deterrents.
Jennifer Aniston was known for her heavy smoking during her prime but has since confessed to giving up the habit, focusing more on her passion for health and fitness.
However, she was spotted lighting a cigarette in 2022 while celebrating her birthday in a video posted by her now ex-husband Justin Theroux.
He uploaded the clip on his Instagram account but quickly removed it.
Jennifer had previously admitted to smoking up to a pack a day before quitting in 2007, acknowledging that it was affecting her health, energy levels, and relationships.
Ben Affleck, who started his smoking habit in 2002, was reportedly able to maintain it even after marrying Jennifer Lopez in 2022. However, sources earlier this year indicated that Lopez has grown weary of his smoking.
An insider revealed to OK!magazine in April: “JLO loves Ben, but she’s tired of his nasty cigarettes.
“She put up with his smoking at first because it’s his only vice left and she didn’t want to be a nag, but she can’t stand it.”
Reports also suggest that Affleck’s ex-wife, Jennifer Garner, found the habit “disgusting” and prohibited him from smoking near their children.
Natalie Portman, star of Black Swan, has been photographed taking cigarette breaks on numerous occasions, despite her vocal opposition to the habit during her youth.
At the age of 13 in 1994, she stated in an interview: “I made my co-star quit smoking,” referring to Jean Reno, her co-star in Leon: The Professional.
She continued: “I told him it was disgusting… I told him it’s nasty for people around him and it’s not good for him.”
Yet, she was recently spotted enjoying a cigarette with Irish actor Paul Mescal outside a London bar.
Bella Hadid has previously confessed to having been hooked to a pack a day routine since she started smoking at the tender age of 14.
She once remarked: “Whether it was eating disorders or smoking… I’m like, ‘Oh, this is what all of the kids are doing’.”
Regardless, she was spotted last month with a cigarette hanging from her mouth while at the Cannes Film Festival in France.
As for Dua Lipa, despite being a professional singer and therefore expected to take extreme measures to protect her vocal cords, she has admitted to having a history with smoking.
However, she made the decision to quit earlier this year following a disturbing infection.Being a smoker increases one’s risk of voice box infections, thus drastically affecting the voice quality.
Sophie Turner, known for her role in Game of Thrones, had swapped cigarettes for vaping but was captured reverting to her old ways.
In December, she was photographed indulging in a smoke while enjoying a coffee in London.
Turner’s attachment to her vape was so strong that reports say she would cry if separated from it.
Jennifer Lawrence even noted that Sophie shed tears during X-Men filming when her e-cigarette was taken away.
Nevertheless, Sophie seemed to abandon both smoking and vaping during her pregnancies, steering clear of these habits while expecting her daughters Willa in 2020 and Delphine in 2022.
