Apple has debunked the myth that placing a wet iPhone in a bag of rice can salvage it. According to Apple, this method can actually damage the device further by allowing small particles of rice to enter the phone and cause additional problems. Additionally, using an external heat source or compressed air, as well as inserting foreign objects into the phone’s connector, should be avoided.
Apple’s new advisory for wet iPhones
“Don’t put your iPhone in a bag of rice. Doing so could allow small particles of rice to damage your iPhone,” Apple warned in its latest advisory to its customers. Instead, Apple recommended gently tapping the iPhone against your hand with the connector facing down to remove excess liquid. After that, it is advised to leave the phone in a dry area with airflow for at least 30 minutes. If a liquid alert is still present, indicating the presence of liquid in the connector or under the pins of the cable, the iPhone should be left in a dry area for up to a day. It may take up to 24 hours for the device to fully dry. If the phone is still not charging after drying, Apple suggests unplugging the cable from the adapter and reconnecting them.
Should you Connect Charger when the phone is wet?
Apple advised against charging your iPhone when it’s wet, noting that it’s not recommended. However, in emergency situations, if you reconnect your iPhone to the cable or accessory, you can choose to override the liquid detection and charge your device, Apple stated.
Furthermore, if you have a wireless charger, you can still utilize it to charge your iPhone. It’s recommended to ensure that the back of your iPhone is dry before placing it on your Qi-certified charger for optimal results, Apple added.
Drying may take hours or even days
It is important to note that the drying process can take several hours or even days, depending on the amount of water that has entered the device. During this time, it is crucial to refrain from turning on the phone, as this can lead to further damage. If the phone continues to have issues after drying, Apple advises taking it to an authorized service provider for professional assistance.
