Mini was going all electric which meant converting its whole portfolio to electric, however it looks like not all Mini buyers want an EV.
Mini was going to go all electric with its whole lineup. There is already the Mini Cooper SE, the Countryman electric and even new John Cooper Works EVs which is a first for the brand. The next thing in line was a Mini Cooper Convertible EV which was going to be launched in 2027 but reports suggest that the model has been cancelled due to poor demand.
The report has been given out by BMW Blog, a renowned community of BMW enthusiasts and they cite industry sources for this information. While a proper reasoning has not been given as to why the convertible EV was scrapped but poor demands of EVs and convertibles in general.
The market wants big and burly SUVs which for a brand like Mini is quite worrisome. Then there is the market share of convertibles which has been dying slowly and then comes the sales of electric vehicles which have been on the downfall as well. Making a niche convertible electric car just for the sake of it probably won’t get any sales.
Other reasons include competition from the Chinese. America has also levied 100% tariffs on Chinese made vehicles which has delayed Mini’s plans to launch the Aceman and Cooper SE in the American market. People who do want a convertible, the new generation ICE model has already been revealed in the European market. Americans can expect the vehicle to roll out sometime next year and we expect Mini India to come up with the convertible model next year as well along with the feisty JCW models.
