In light of the same, Dr Manjusha Agarwal, Senior Consultant Internal Medicine Gleneagles Hospitals, Parel, Mumbai shared some tips.
Stay Hydrated And Drink Enough Fluids
The rising summer temperature leads to dehydration and weakness. Senior citizens should drink coconut water, chaas, kokum sherbet, and lemon water to beat the heat. Thus, they are advised to drink at least 12 glasses of water daily.
Eat Well
Elderly people should have well-balanced meals inclusive of seasonal fruits, vegetables, nuts, and foods with high water content such as cucumber, muskmelon, and watermelon to stay hydrated. It is better to avoid caffeine, alcohol, smoking, and spicy, processed, and canned foods.
Stay Cool During The Hot Weather
It is the need of the hour to avoid heat by staying indoors and not venturing out of the house between 12:00 pm – 4:00 pm. Moreover, always wear a hat, or scarf or carry an umbrella, if you have to step out of the house. Take cool showers to maintain a normal body temperature, and opt for curtains or blinds to block out direct sunlight. Try to keep the room cool.
Dress Correctly
Go for lightweight, loose-fitting, and breathable clothing made of cotton. Wearing tight clothes that hamper circulation is a strict no-no.
Don’t Indulge In Heavy Workouts
Exercising during extreme heat outside can cause a heat stroke. So, try to exercise indoors during the evening. Choosing activities such as walking or yoga can help you to stay fit during summer.
Keep Emergency Kit Ready
Always keep an emergency kit packed with required medicines for elderly people in case of heat stroke.
Implement these simple strategies to keep elderly people safe and healthy in the summer.
