Apple is introducing a cool new feature called Genmoji in the upcoming iOS 18 update. Genmoji lets you create your own personalised emoji-like images using artificial intelligence. While it’s not available in the first test version of iOS 18, Apple has shared more details about how it works.
Genmoji behaves Like standard emoji
Even though Genmoji are unique images that aren’t the same as regular emoji, they are designed to work just like them.Apple has developed a new API called NSAdaptiveImageGlyph, which enables the use of Genmoji and other personalised images alongside regular text. This means you can use Genmoji by themselves, mix them with words, change their style, copy and paste them, and even send them as stickers. Any app or platform that supports rich text will be able to use Genmoji seamlessly.
Under the hood: How Apple makes Genmoji work
The magic behind Genmoji lies in Apple’s innovative implementation. NSAdaptiveImageGlyphs are based on a standard image format with a square aspect ratio and multiple resolutions. Additionally, they are enhanced by metadata such as a globally unique and stable identifier, a content description for accessibility purposes, and alignment metrics. These features allow for proper layout and placement of images, ensuring that Genmoji can be used and formatted alongside regular text without any compatibility issues.
Meanwhile, a user just needs to describe what emoji they want, and they can do so in natural language.
Gemoji will work outside of the Apple ecosystem
Apple has taken steps to ensure that Genmoji can be shared and enjoyed across various platforms, even outside of Apple’s ecosystem. When sharing Genmoji on the web or other platforms that may not fully support the feature, Apple has implemented compatibility fallbacks. This means that users can still share their Genmoji creations with others, regardless of the platform they are using.
