With desk jobs, maintaining physical fitness and health can be a task. However, as Zomato CEO Deepinder Goyal’s move to appoint a Chief Fitness Officer suggests, it is possible to incorporate exercise and wellness into the office environment.
Right from resisting the urge to take an elevator instead of steps to performing stretches while being on the chair, there are ample ways you can focus on fitness while being at work. Dr Siddhant Bhargava, Fitness and Nutritional Expert and C-founder of Food-Darzee, shared some valuable (read practical) tips on how to stay fit while being committed to a desk job.
Get up!
One of the key recommendations is to break the sedentary cycle by standing up, stretching and walking around every hour. This not only helps to keep the blood circulating but also reduces the risk of developing health issues associated with prolonged sitting, such as heart disease and diabetes.
Perform stretches
“Perform simple stretches on your chair and at your desk to relieve tension in your neck, shoulders, back and wrist,” suggested Dr Bhargava.
“Shoulder rolls, neck stretches, back stretches, hip stretches and wrist rotations are examples of simple desk exercises,” he added.
Simple leg exercises
Engaging the leg muscles is another crucial aspect of staying fit in the office. Exercises like leg lifts, knee lifts, or seated marching can be done right at your desk. These exercises not only engage the leg muscles but also improve circulation.
“Sun mole ankle movements will keep the blood circulation in your toes and feet,” Dr Bhargava added.
Take the stairs
Taking the stairs whenever possible is another effective way to incorporate physical activity into your workday. This simple decision can significantly increase your daily step count and contribute to overall fitness.
Utilise the lunch hour
Dr Bhargava also recommended utilising lunch hours for short workouts. These could be done in your workspace or even in your cubicle, making them a convenient option for those with busy schedules.
Simple things, but essentials! Keeping yourself hydrated throughout the day, taking frequent breaks away from the screen and meditating for a few minutes can also contribute to overall well-being.
Remember, health is wealth! With some planning and commitment, you can stay fit while working in an office.
